The Burton Street Peace Garden
The Burton Street Peace Garden was developed in 2002 as two neighborhood leaders bought a couple of vacant lots to re-purpose them into productive public space. It has been a centerpiece to alleviate challenges such as drugs and crime that have affected the neighborhood. The garden now boasts a range of plants and food that are being sold at local community events. Additionally, much of the garden is adorned with a range of salvaged and re-purposed materials that offer a sculptural and provocative response to social, economic, and environmental justice issues.
In short, the Burton Street Peace Garden is about two concepts intricately tied to each other: WASTE + PRODUCE. These gardens serve to not only heal a space that had been left to WASTE but to train and challenge current and future leaders and community members to PRODUCE new solutions to problems that face our society.
